Low Energy Q & A
by Heather Brown, DC
What causes feelings of low energy?
Often, fatigue results from illness or other condition and as that problem passes, your normal energy levels return. However, in the case of chronic fatigue, a cause may be unknown or indirect. A number of minor issues may combine to drag you down.
Some common contributors to chronic low energy include:
- Depression and anxiety
- Fibromyalgia
Allergies and hay fever
- Food intolerance or allergies
- Heart disease
- Anemia, the most common blood disorder in the United States
- Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea
- Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis
- Diabetes and other blood sugar issues
- Thyroid problems
How can chiropractic care restore lost energy?
Many of the underlying conditions contributing to fatigue may trace back to poor communications between body systems due to misalignment of your spinal column. The conduit and protector for your spinal cord, the spine consists of many complex joints that permit movement of your body, while at the same time offering support and protection for the nerve bundle of the spinal cord.
When minor misalignments of the spine occur, the surrounding soft tissue – muscles, ligaments, and spinal discs – may experience inflammation in reaction to irritation from the misalignment. This, in turn, may irritate nerves in the spinal canal or where branch nerves leave the spine and spread through the body. You may be completely unaware of this inflammation and its effects, or you may feel aches and even pain.
In every case, the body’s reaction to that inflammation takes valuable resources to service, as the body attempts to repair the damage. This takes a toll on your energy level. Chiropractic care restores your spine’s alignment, reducing irritation on nerves and other soft tissue, permitting the body to more effectively repair the small pockets of damage in your body. As this healing progresses, the resources previously used by the inflammation process now return to your energy reserves.
Is ongoing chiropractic care necessary to maintain my energy?
When you want to lose weight, you may turn to diet and exercise, the classic combination, to meet your goal of losing 20 pounds, for example. Once you meet your goal, you can continue with diet and exercise to maintain or lower your weight further. If you return to old habits, you’ll likely regain the weight.
The same is true for energy and chiropractic care. Pursuing maintenance care with Dr. Brown gives you the best chance to keep energy levels high.
